Bloco Ashe Samba Group was Commended in the Community Impact category of the Made in Bury Business Awards last year.

In this blog we'll be taking a closer look at the people and the history behind the music! Bloco Ashe is a percussive group that plays Samba influenced grooves and global beats from Brazil, Cuba and Africa. The group's aim is to promote, support and develop percussion-based music and related carnival arts in the local community.

The group was started by Zac Sargent, a Manchester based percussion musician and samba enthusiast. After receiving support from the Bury Metro Arts Association (BMAA) in May 2008, Bloco Ashe started meeting on Saturday mornings.

Membership at Bloco Ashe is open to anyone aged 11 years and over. Group membership is diverse and includes people with learning disabilities and their carers; adults with physical disabilities, people who are unemployed, students, school children, silver samba players (otherwise known as the over 50s) as well as adults who work full time and part time, parents and their children and grandparents with their grandchildren.

Each individual makes Bloco Ashe a true community group. It welcomes anyone who wants to participate in and experience the joy of music making - without needing any previous musical experience. There is no need to be able to read music and there are no auditions, just come along and have fun!

Bloco Ashe is always available for gigs in the local area - find out more by visiting http://www.blocoashe.co.uk
