Bury Council was formed in 1974 following local government re-organisation, and is now one of the ten districts in Greater Manchester.
The new borough brought together the towns of Bury, Radcliffe, Prestwich, Whitefield, Ramsbottom and Tottington, and now has a population of around 185,000.
As a metropolitan council, Bury is a 'single-tier' organisation that is responsible for the full range of local authority services, from education and social services to highways, parks and leisure. It is the borough's largest employer, with more than 8,000 employees.
